The Father

M., a person standing on the edge of an early mid-life crisis, woodenly woke up on a lazy late summer morning. The low humming of the air-conditioner and the cool satin sheets promptly extinguished any feelings of happiness. Like every previous morning, the feeling of comfort that came with awaking, reminded M. of the oppressing chip on his shoulder.

He was born as an heir. In the most specific sense of the word. His birth bestowed on him certain obligations. Mainly the obligation to live according to his status. This meant higher expenses to obtain the attributes required by his status. Cars, women, fashion brands. Appearance was everything and it had to be concrete and one-dimensional. Fulfilling the role and duties prescribed by one's status is exhausting. Mentally and money-wise as well. M. would much rather have gone drifting in a random parking lot with his school mates or drank a few beers by a bonfire in someone's summer residence. No air-conditioned eco-food restaurants and wannabe society events.

M. had only been ten years old when his father initiated him into their family's obligations that are handed down from generation to generation. A family heirloom, an imposing engraved spade, stood above the mantle like a disapproving reminder. M.'s destiny was to belong into an ancient empire of opinion leaders. An empire whose members traditionally fell hard from dizzying heights. And if the reasons behind falling caused disagreement and doubts, the shovel above the mantle was what was supposed to resolve everything. The procedure of which was taught to M. as basic knowledge. He just didn't want to think about it. Sadly, however, recently his father had also fallen from grace. Making him responsible for all kinds of tedious chores and raging doubts. M.'s routine life was changing whether he liked it or not.

M. stretched out his legs in front of the fireplace and furrowed his brow. Postponing everything became more and more complicated by day. Or night by night, to be exact. Everything started from the silent creaking of the spade in the night. At first he ignored it, but night by night the spade's activities intensified. It seemed to M. that even during the day the spade was scowling at him. In the more recent nights the spade's disapproval had been complimented by his father's offended ghost sitting on his bedside. M. was at the end of his tether.

It was slowly darkening outside. With a heavy sigh M. stood up from the couch, took a last sip of Red Bull straight from the can, and took down the shovel from the wall.
