From February 17th to 19th, Sweden's capital city of Stockholm was the site of the foremost art fair in Northern Europe – Market 2012.

This was the seventh year that the fair was gathering together the most prestigious art galleries from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. The Royal Academy of Fine Arts has been chosen yet again as the venue for the fair; for more than 270 years now, it has served an essential role in supporting and strengthening the sectors of art and architecture.

Forty-two galleries were participating this year (the largest number yet), including such world-famous art fair regulars as Andrehn-Schiptjenko(Stockholm), Galerie Forsblom (Helsinki), Nils Staerk (Copenhagen), i8 (Reykjavik), Galleri Nicolai Wallner (Copenhagen) and Christian Larsen (Stockholm).

The art fair's structure was composed of various divisions; there's the main gallery section – “Market”; a platform for the development of new galleries – “Market Emerging”; a section geared towards galleries working with high-quality editions and multiples – “Market Editions & Multiples”; and even a special place for all of the large-format projects – “Market at Large”. In addition to the visual aspects of the fair, visitors will also have the opportunity to hear industry professionals speak at “Market Talks”; one of the lecturers scheduled this year is Georgina Adam, editor of The Art Newspaper, who will be giving the lecture “The Global Art Market Today”.

Following in the steps of other international art fairs, Saturday, February 18 was scheduled as Gallery Night, during which Stockholm's art institutions stayed open late to allow for visiting art enthusiasts to experience the city's art scene.

We present a photo report from the opening ceremonies of Market 2012, held on February 16:
