RIBOCA2 announces its participants list

RIBOCA 2, the 2nd Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, whose subtitle is taken from Māra Zālīte’s 2011 collection of poems Viss reizē zied (And Suddenly it All Blooms) and which will take place from May 16 until October 16, has announced its participants list. RIBOCA 2 will focus on the European art scene, with particular attention to the Baltic region and the fact that the biennial’s vision is inspired by the history of Riga, Latvia and the Baltic states. From the 13th century onward, this region has witnessed many different wars, foreign rulers and economic crises. The so-called “end of the world” has arrived here several times. But in spite of all the trauma, the people here have survived, finding strength in their oral and written poetry, their knowledge of the rhythms of nature and the ancient secrets of folk medicine. The exhibition’s subtitle is closely linked with the Latvian dainas (folk verses/songs) tradition and the poetic drive for survival encoded within it.

The main curator of RIBOCA 2 is Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, a French curator who describes her concept as the “recovery of re-enchantment”. In an interview with Arterritory.com this past summer, she commented: “(..) It is very important for me to be able to work on the theme of re-enchantment, how to reconsider our perspectives outside the discourse of the apocalypse. How, in a moment of huge global upheavals, we can manage to redraw our relationships, our attention, the care we offer to others, may they be human or non-human. This is very much inspired by the history of Latvia, which has gone through many rebirths throughout its history and which has also always maintained incredibly strong bonds with cosmic and non-human rhythms. Our future can only lie in the reassessment of our way of being human, and I believe this can be achieved in a very positive way. I also strongly believe that artists are the best alternative guides we have to imagine what these other futures could be – they are the ones who can propose a new mental ecology.”
