The Programme of “Cēsis 2013” Art Festival’s Opening Days 0


Art festival “Cēsis 2013”, which will take place for the seventh consecutive year in one of the most beautiful cities of Latvia, is almost here. presents the programme of the festival’s opening days – June 28, 29 and 30. 


Three of the festival’s visual art exhibitions will start at noon:

*Karlīna Vītoliņa’s solo exhibition “Portraits” at Cēsis Printing House, 16 Gaujas Street, which will include 70 large-scale photographs. The artist describes the exhibition as classic and contemporary at the same time, as a black-and-white dream, a movie. Express interview with Karlīna Vītoliņa.

*Drawing exhibition “Abyss. Visvaldis Ziediņš” at the Cēsis Exhibition Hall, 3 Pils Square. Curated by Ieva Kalniņa. The exhibition will present hitherto unexhibited works by the artist, paying particular attention to his works on paper and studies of materials of nature.

*International exhibition of contemporary art “Summertime Readings” at the Cēsis Brewery, 11 Lenču Street, and various urban venues. The exhibition is curated by Kęstutis Kuizinas, the director of Contemporary Art Centre (CAC), Vilnius. The inspiration for this exhibition stems from the city’s atmosphere, which during the summertime resembles a resort with the holidaymakers streaming into this small town in the North of Latvia every annual arts festival season. *At 6.30pm a performance “Scripted Smalltalk” by Estonian artist Krõõt Juurak will take place at the “Kolonna Hotel Cēsis”, 1 Vienības Square.

*At 7.30pm will begin a multimedia concert performance “Latvian Radio Choir, Cage and Time” at the Festival Hall of the Cēsis Sports Complex. From the technical point of view, the performance is based on an investigation of the relationship between picture and sound.


*At 5pm a theatre performance “Hag” staged by Latvian National Theatre will take place at the Cēsis Castle Barn, 15 Pils Square. It will be an absurd situation with an unpredictable result based on a story by the great Russian writer, master of the absurd, staged by the young director Vladislav Nastavshev who learned his craft in St Petersburg and London.

*At 8pm the visitors are invited to enjoy a concert “Ksenija Sidorova and Sinfonietta Rīga” at the Festival Hall of the Cēsis Sports Complex. The performance promises to bring a wide range of music – from the 20th century Igor Stravinsky’s “Dumbarton Oaks” to Latvian naivist Georgs Pelēcis’s tango variations.


*At 5pm Cēsis Castle Park Open-Air Auditorium will hold a concert “Raimonds Pauls and Italian Film Music”. Many of the listeners will be transported back to their encounters with such masterpieces as “The Road” or “Amarcord” and the concert in Cēsis will lend a new form to these memories, created in the rich palette of a wind orchestra.

*At 10pm the Courtyard of the Cēsis Castle will welcome all movie lovers to the opening of film programme “Best of British Cinema Classics; Selections by Valentīna Freimane”, which will begin with a screening of “Private Life of Henry VIII” (1933).
