Boris Orlov. Special project Phantom pains
Tretyakov State Gallery, Moscow
1 March – 23 June

Spring in Tretyakov Gallery will begin with the opening of Boris Orlov’s exhibition. It is understood what caused these phantom pains in Sots art sculptor. Of course, it’s long gone Soviet era. Nostalgia for yesterdays and at the same time striving to uncrown them is embedded in sculpture, wall-relief and installation. More than 20 works of B. Orlov until the end of June will be on view at Krymsky Val, 10, at the Special Projects Hall of Tretyakov State Gallery.

Philippe Parreno
Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture

Along with exhibition above at Tretyakov State Gallery there is opening of large scale exhibition of French artist Philippe Parreno. It is the first opportunity for Russian spectator to get acquainted with artist’s special approach to decorating his personal displays. While working with cinema, performance, texts, graphics and sculpture, Parreno always makes his exhibition an outstanding piece of art, not just gathering of separate works.  

The main event of the exhibition is Russian premiere of the film Marilyn, the most recent work of the artist: the events of the film are based on view of the ghost of Marilyn Monroe lingering at a room of Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. The exhibition hall of the Garage is turned into a kind of movie theatre for this film.

Along with the exhibition Irina Kulik and videoart historian Antonio Geusa will read several lectures on Parreno himself. There will be also master-classes for children and excursions around the exhibition.

Moscow Museum of Modern Art

Now&After is an international festival of videoart that takes place annually, beginning with 2011, at the media art centre of the same name lead by curator Marina Fomenko. Every year format of festival is changed depending on the venue. This time Now&After will take place at the exhibition halls of Moscow Museum of Modern Art.

This year the theme of the festival is Between Image and Personality. Artists are up to interpret an artistic image of a person and to show the border of one’s image and personality. Works chosen by organizers will be exhibited at the halls of MMOMA until the beginning of May. One work presentation under the name VideoNow will be demonstrated every day.

Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-garde
The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The largest exposition of Victorian English art since the exhibition of William Turner in 2009 will be opened in summer at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. There will be about 150 works from London’s Tate Gallery collection with The Annunciation of Dante Rossetti, Ophelia of John Everett Millais, Claudio and Isabella of William Hunt among them. Besides paintings, there will be also objects of ornamental art and sculpture. The exhibition is coming to the Pushkin Museum after its presentation at the Tate Gallery and Washington National Gallery. Demonstrating such an amount of expensive masterpieces couldn’t be realized without museum’s communication with entrepreneur Alisher Usmanov.

5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art
20 September – 20 October

5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art will take place in autumn 2013 at the several venues, and one of the main will be Moscow Manege. Works of artists, chosen by the guest curator Catherine de Zegher, will be on view at the 10, 000 metres large venues. Commissioner and art director of the Biennale traditionally will be Iosif Bakstein.  

Art critic and editor Catherine de Zegher was the curator of Biennale in Sydney in 2012, and art society remembers it as one of the most unusual exhibitions. De Zegher still hasn’t disclosed names of participating artists, but the conception of the project is ready and it is promised to be innovative and inspiring

Russia The Netherlands 2013
As part of The Netherlands Bilateral Year in Russia an entire series of exhibitions at different venues in Moscow is coming up.

From 23th of May till 9th of September at the State Museum of Oriental Art (Nikitskiy Boulevard, 12A) the exhibition of the artist Marius Bauer will take place. The artist is known for his presence at the coronation of Nikolay II and series of unique aquarelles, canvas and etchings dedicated to this event.

At the Pushkin Museum (Volkhonka, 12) from 1st of June till 1st of October the exhibition  Group Portrait of the Golden Age of Amsterdam will be on view. Most of the works provided by the Historical Museum of Amsterdam (including canvas of Dirck Jakobsz and Govert Flinck), have never been exhibited beyond Amsterdam.

Foam Museum will provide works for photo exhibition Still/Life – Contemporary Dutch Photography to the Multimedia Art Museum (Ostozhenka, 16) that will take place from 12th of June till 14th of July. This traditional Dutch genre is interpreted by young Dutch photographers completely differently from their ancestors from the Golden Age.  

From 1st of July till 31st of August at Grinberg Gallery (Syromyatnicheskiy per., 1) there will be another exhibition of contemporary Dutch photography Artbeat collaboratively with Kahmann Gallery and Melkweg.

One of the most significant events of The Netherlands Bilateral Year in Russia will be the display of about 50 works of Piet Mondrian, abstract artist and inspirer of Yves Saint-Laurent. The Municipal Museum of Hague kindly benefits Moscow visitors with famous Dutch Neoplasticism artist. The exhibition will be available from 19th September till 24th of November.

Artplay Design Centre (Nizhnyaa Syromyatnicheskaya, 10) will host the exhibition Space of Exception, reflections of contemporary Dutch artists on exceptional spaces in the real world. Visionaries will on view in Moscow from 20th of September till 20th of October.

Moscow Museum of Modern Art will exhibit works of one of the most famous graphic artists of the world, Moritz Cornelis Escher. The full overview of artist’s famous impossible patterns will be available from 1st of October till 1st of December.
