The collections formed by art dealers usually find their way – in total or parts – after his death to the auction rooms. A recent example of a break-up to happen is the formidable collection of Post War art by the renowned Swedish dealer Jan-Eric Löwenadler who died last year. Löwenadler played an important role in the New York art world in the 80’s. The saying “to be in the right place at the right time” was more than true in his case. In New York Löwenadler became acquainted with Warhol, Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Keith Haring to name a few. Only a year or two before his death in 2010 Löwenadler bought his first works by Damien Hirst because, as he said, he wanted to “console” himself for the losses he had made in the Lehman Brothers collapse.  Not long before his death he started to buy Chinese contemporary art. Jan-Eric Löwenadler was undeniably one of Sweden’s most internationally orientated art dealers.

Another “dealer” collection was sold in Stockholm at auction in 2009. It had been formed by the nationally equally renowned Swedish gallerist Eva af Burén. Af Burén was one of the leading gallerists promoting modern art in Stockholm in the 60’s and 70’s. Her private collection was inherited by her daughter whose children put the collection up for sale. Eva af Burén’s collection comprised among others works by Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, César, Jean Dubuffet, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Henri Michaux, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Marcel Duchamp. Also many Swedish artists had their debut at Galerie af Burén.

Yet another, different aspect was adopted by Jeannette Bonnier, who similarly to Jan-Eric Löwenadler lived and moved in the art world of New York in the 80’s. On her initiative the Bonnier Art Hall was opened in Stockholm in 2006. The Bonnier family is Sweden’s biggest media-owning dynasty. It has long been a patron of arts.

The Bonnier Art Hall does not have a permanent exhibition on view but arranges seminars, workshops, tours of installations and temporary exhibitions stressing now in art and living with art.

The Marie Bonnier Dahlin Foundation, established in 1985 by Jeanette Bonnier in memory of her daughter, found a natural home in the Bonnier Art Hall. The foundation promotes one or two Swedish young artists yearly with a prize sum.

The Finnish art scene has traditionally seen many private individuals forming collections which have been donated or deposited in museums by their owners.
